Pizza delivery has been pretty much the norm since the sixties when Tom Monaghan, the founder of Dominos Pizza, started bringing pizza pies right to the doorsteps of Americans.

Today, home pizza delivery is still an integral part of the pizza culture, and there are other areas of our modern culture where pizza delivery fits in just as well. The big screen is one of those places.

The Movie Industry’s Rising Star

Pizza delivery has been making a presence in the movie industry for years.

In the movie “Blue Streak”, Martin Lawrence dresses up as a pizza delivery guy to try and get into the office of the police commissioner. He’s got to be the most stylish (or not!) pizza delivery guy in history.

Kevin McAllister ordered pizza for his jaunt in a white stretch limo around New York City in “Home Alone 2″.

There are even movies that have a pizza delivery guy as the main character. The 1984 comedy, Delivery Boys and Spike Lee’s 1989, “Do the Right Thing” are two examples.

Beyond The Movies

There are pizza delivery guys in novels like Tom Wolfe’s “I Am Charlotte Simmons” and Neal Stephenson’s “Snow Crash”. Pizza delivery has even made its way in the mainstream television racket with the Australian comedy series, Pizza. Pizza even has its own month. October has been National Pizza Month since 1987.

Pizza isn’t just a food anymore. It’s has been integrated into our society over time. It’s just a part of who we are. It doesn’t matter if you live in Melbourne, Paris or San Francisco, you’ll find pizza somewhere in today’s culture.

Who doesn’t love pizza? We sure do here at Melbourne Pizza Delivery!

Whether you are in Madrid, Melbourne or Mumbai, pizza is one of those foods you can eat anywhere at any time. You can eat it hot or eat it cold, you can eat it on a plate or on a napkin. You can change the flavor of it by changing the toppings you put on it.

That be stating the obvious, but there are a few other things you may not know about pizza. For instance, do you know how large the largest pizza in the world is? Here are some Pizza World Records …

Worlds Largest Pizza

The worlds largest pizza was created on December 8, 1990. At the Pick ‘n Play hypermarket in Johannesburg, South Africa, a pizza that measured 37.4 meters in diameter was made. It took 500 kg of flour, 800 kg of cheese and 900 kg of tomato puree. Wow! Now that’s a pizza of pizzas. It was recorded in the Guinness Book of Records, and still holds the Pizza World Record.

Worlds Most Expensive Pizza

Here’s another thing you might not know about pizza. The most expensive pizza was made by a restaurateur named Domenico Crolla. Among other things, it was topped with sunblush-tomato sauce, Scottish smoked salmon, medallions of venison, lobster marinated in the finest cognac and champagne-soaked caviar. It sold at an auction for charity for a whopping $3,700.

Worlds Fastest Pizza Eater

So how fast can you eat your pizza? Well, the odds are that Josh Anderson could eat one faster. On March 22, 2008, in Wellington, New Zealand, Josh packed away a 12” pizza in 1 minute and 47 seconds flat to break another Pizza World Record. Now there’s a guy who loves his pizza.

Josh Anderson – Guinness Pizza World Record Eater In Action

Click here to view the embedded video.

Worlds Longest Line Of Pizza

Hate long pizza lines? How about long lines of pizza? The longest line of pizza was created on November 15, 2008 in Austin, Texas, USA. Mangia Pizza’s 1,023 foot line of pepperoni and cheese pizzas made its way into the Guinness Book of World Records.

Not to worry, the pizza was boxed up and shipped off to Meals on Wheels (a public service project that helps feed the elderly and others in need) who distributed it to area residents.

It is believed and largely accepted by scholars that the tomato actually originates all the way across the sea (the Atlantic, that is).

From America And Back Again

The tomato was originally a crop of the Americas; not the united States, but the Central Americas. The first credited tomato farmers were the indigenous tribes of Central America and Mexico, with the honors going primarily to the Aztec and Incan tribes. The Aztecs and the Incas are known to have grown tomatoes for their own use from around 700 A.D.

It was not until the 16th Century that our ‘civilised’ European ancestors came to know the fruit. Explorers in the Americas in the 16th Century discovered the fruit among the indigenous peoples, and took it back with them to Europe. To say that it was love at first sight among us all would not be accurate, however.

Poison Tomatoes? – Not On Our Pizza!

The tomato was brought back and introduced in England, Spain, France, and Italy. The Spanish, French, and Italians took the fruit for all it was worth, but the English thought it to be poisonous, and so it remained of little use in English kitchens – ironic, seeing as how so much of the world was now enjoying, and not dying, from the tomato in numerous ways.

True to form, the English continued their tradition of tomato avoidance, and even took it with them around the world. As the colonists began to colonise in America, they continued to believe the tomato was dangerous, hence the title of this article – poison pizza!

It was not until the mid-1800’s that the tomato began to gain some acceptance, and it was not really trusted until later in the 19th century, as Italian fare and pizza came to have a stronger foothold in the hearts and stomachs of the anglo’s. Fortunately for us cooler heads prevailed, and our pizza here in Melbourne has a much more enticing flavour for it.

Welcome to the home of Melbourne Pizza Delivery. This is where we prove to you how to locate the best spots for dining out in your your favourite city. With a huge bias towards the humble pizza, we will review the best places to eat out or take away here in Melbourne. If there is a pizza worth eating, looking at, bragging about or getting delivered to your doorstep, then this is the site to read about it.

Your Favourite Pizza Delivery

Arguably, there are few better than Melbourne for dining out for a fine pizza and if you want a supreme gourmet delivered to your door, then you need to go no further. Pizza delivery is one of the most loved ways to get a feed in front of your TV or spend time with your friends without the cooking process. As one of Australia’s favorite take away foods, pizza has also become a very popular restaurant cuisine with thousands of slices being served daily all over Australia.

Annually, the global pizza industry is worth $30 Billion. Melbourne takes care of its fair share in the Australian market and certainly has established a massive foothold in the pizza delivery market.

How Do We Compare In The Pizza Consumption Stakes?

World wide, Australia is yet to prove its worth in the pizza consumption stakes. Especially to the super hungry American people who stand head and crust above the rest in pizza consumption. Here are some interesting statistics from the American pizza consumers:

94% of the US population eats pizza.

Americans eat 350 slices of pizza per second, or 100 acres per day.

The USA has over 60,000 pizza parlours.

Pizzarias represent 17% of all restaurants in the USA.

On average, an American citizen eats 46 pizza slices per year.

One third of American pizza eaters prefer pepperoni.

Over 250 Million pounds of pepperoni is consumed annually in the USA.

As you can see, Australia has got a long way to go in the consumption stakes. Sometimes, bigger isn’t better and here at Melbourne Pizza Delivery, we will prove to you that the best pizza is right here at home in the heart of Australia’s Restaurant Capital.
